Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and County Commissioner Raquel Regalado have announced the approval of a $400+ million cargo facility at Miami International Airport (MIA). This four-story cargo hub, the first of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, is set to significantly increase MIA's cargo capacity. Scheduled for completion in 2029, the facility will boost the airport's total cargo capacity by at least 50%, potentially reaching 5 million tons annually, future-proofing MIA until 2041.

The new Vertically Integrated Cargo Community (VICC) will span nearly 800,000 square feet on 11 acres of airport land. The project is expected to have a substantial local economic impact, creating 8,500 temporary jobs during the five-year construction phase, earning $500 million in wages, and generating 2,500 permanent jobs post-construction. Additionally, it will bring in a minimum of $512 million in rent and business revenue to Miami-Dade County’s Aviation Department over 40 years.

The VICC will be a sustainable and environmentally friendly facility, aiming for a silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and a silver certification from Global Infrastructure Basel under SuRe standards. The project aligns with broader efforts to modernize MIA, which includes nearly $9 billion in capital improvements and upgrades over the next decade.

The autonomous wheelchairs are designed to transport passengers to their desired gates after they select their destination on a touch screen. This innovation provides users with greater freedom, confidence, and independence, significantly improving their travel experience. On average, 120 American Airlines passengers per day are using these chairs within concourses D and E at MIA.

This initiative is part of MIA's broader commitment to accessibility, which includes a range of services such as the MIAair tour program for passengers with disabilities, accessibility lanes in U.S. Customs and Border Protection areas, wheelchair charging stations, sunflower lanyards for travelers with hidden disabilities, multi-sensory rooms, and the Aira Airport Network for blind or low-vision travelers.
